Toll Payment Text Scams

Public Service Announcement: Beware of Toll Payment Text Scams

The Dixon Police Department wishes to alert all residents to a recent surge in fraudulent text messages claiming unpaid toll fees. These scams are designed to steal personal and financial information.

How the Scam Works:

Residents receive unsolicited text messages alleging overdue toll charges, often threatening fines or license suspension if immediate payment isn't made. These messages typically contain links to fake websites that closely mimic official toll agency sites.

Protect Yourself:

  • Do Not Click on Links: Avoid clicking on any links in unsolicited texts.
  • Verify Through Official Channels: If you receive such a message, contact the toll agency directly using known contact information.
  • Report Suspicious Messages: Forward unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM) and report them to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Remember, legitimate agencies will not request sensitive information via text message. Stay vigilant and protect your personal information.
