Public Safety Announcement: E-bike & E-scooter Safety

As e-bikes, e-scooters, and e-motorcycles become increasingly popular with our youth, particularly for school commutes, the Dixon Police Department, in partnership with the Dixon Unified School District, is committed to keeping our students safe.

With the rise of electric vehicles, it's essential that both students and parents are well-informed about safety precautions and the California Vehicle Codes governing their use. Our goal? To promote safe riding habits and educate our community on the laws designed to protect all road users.

Key Safety Tips:

  • Always wear a helmet – it could save your life.
  • Ride on the right side of the road, moving with the flow of traffic.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings – avoid distractions like phones.
  • Obey traffic signs and signals at all times.
  • Know where you can ride – sidewalks and certain roadways may be off-limits.

Important Regulations You Need to Know:

  • CVC 21235: Riders must have a valid California Learner's Permit or Driver's License to operate an e-scooter.
  • CVC 21235: All minors are required to wear a helmet while riding an e-scooter.
  • CVC 22411: The maximum speed limit for e-scooters is 15 mph.
  • CVC 21235 & 21229: No riding on sidewalks – stick to bike lanes and trails.
  • CVC 21235: E-scooters are for solo riders only – no tandem riding allowed!
