Back to School Safety Reminders

As the new school year begins, the Dixon Police Department would like to remind the community to be vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure the safety of our students.

Safety Tips for Drivers:

  • Slow Down: Adhere to school zone speed limits and be prepared for sudden stops.
  • Watch for Children: Be especially alert for children crossing the street, getting on or off buses, and walking or biking to school.
  • Obey Traffic Signals and Signs: Follow all traffic laws and school crossing guard directions.
  • Stop for School Buses: It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. Remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights are turned off.

Safety Tips for Parents and Students:

  • Use Crosswalks: Always cross streets at designated crosswalks and intersections.
  • Walk on Sidewalks: If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible.
  • Bike Safety: Wear a helmet and use bike lanes or paths when available. Follow traffic rules and signals.
  • Stay Visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially during early morning and late afternoon hours.

General Safety Tips:

  • Plan Ahead: Ensure students know their route to and from school and practice it with them.
  • Stranger Awareness: Remind children to avoid talking to strangers and to report any suspicious behavior to a trusted adult.
  • Emergency Information: Make sure your child knows your contact information and how to reach you in case of an emergency.

The Dixon Police Department is committed to the safety of our community and encourages everyone to take these precautions seriously. Working together, we can ensure a safe and successful start to the school year.
